Radiology Residency & Fellowship Information

Welcome to the Department of Radiology Residency Program.

Thank you for your interest in our Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program. The principle objective of the program is to train highly competent, well-rounded and responsible clinical radiologists with positive attitudes towards research. Emphasis is placed on training the resident to assume the role of consultant in the patient-care team, while also engaging in diagnostic and therapeutic imaging-guided procedures. The program strives to provide an excellent educational program with both in-depth practical experience in all radiological subspecialties, as well an extensive lecture-based curriculum. Basic and clinical research is encouraged for residents.

Basic Information

• Training hospitals:
  • UIC Hospital (UIH): Tertiary-care academic hospital in the Illinois Medical District
    • 495 beds
    • Regional stroke center and large referral population
    • Exposure to more complex radiology cases and unique pathology due to central location in Chicago
  • Mercy Hospital: Large community hospital located south of downtown
    • 402 beds
    • Exposure to many ‘bread and butter’ radiology cases
  • Lurie Children’s Hospital (LCH): Tertiary-care pediatric hospital located downtown
    • Largest children’s hospital in Chicago
    • Exposure to pediatric trauma
• One-on-one interaction with attending radiologists
• Resident-coverage predominates
  • AMPLE IR Training with Interventional Radiology ESIR slots available
  • No other clinical fellows: complex, high-level case exposure for residents
• State of the Art Equipment
  • MRI (9.4T, 3 x 3.0T, 3 x 1.5T)
  • SPECT-CT
  • Two PET-CTs
• GE PACS with a fully integrated EMR
• Eight new PGY-2 positions per year are matched through the NRMP
  • All applications are accepted only via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)

Curriculum & Call

• Curriculum
  • Repeating Core Curriculum – modeled after the ABR syllabus
  • Tuesday Lecture Series: 7AM to 10AM – 12PM (didactic only)
  • Noon Conferences: M, W-F (didactic and case-based)
  • Grand Rounds given by residents in a topic of their choice
  • Dedicated physics lectures
    • Clinical physics taught by MDs
    • Basic physics taught by on-site physicist.
  • Annual Resident Research Symposium
  • Numerous multidisciplinary conferences (e.g., Neurology, GI, GU, ENT, Neurosurgery, Rheumatology, Oncology, Orthopedics).
• Call
  • No independent call during first year
    • Buddy call system with on-site senior beginning in October
  • Night float system
    • Attending read out sessions in the morning with direct feedback
  • 24-hour ultrasound tech coverage
  • Attending and senior resident are available for consultation through a teleradiology service
    • Mercy Home Backup serves as internal moonlighting

  • ARIP during 3rd year

• 3rd years are placed on less demanding rotations during the six months prior to their Board exam
  • In addition, time-off and funding for both Physics and Boards reviews (e.g. Huda and Duke Reviews)
• Vacations are scheduled individually and include:
  • Twenty workdays (four weeks) per year
